Transliteration Alphabet Tables

Every letter the transliteration tool knows, laid out chart by chart.

Transliteration rewrites words letter by letter into another alphabet, so Москва becomes Moskva. Translation would give you the English word Moscow instead. The charts below use practical BGN style romanization for Russian and Ukrainian, a modern Greek scheme, the official Latin alphabet for Serbian, and a phonetic typing map for Latin to Russian.

How Each Script Maps to Latin

Russian Cyrillic to Latin

The letters English lacks get two character combinations: ж = zh, х = kh, ц = ts, ч = ch, ш = sh, щ = shch, ё = yo. Hard and soft signs are dropped. Хрущёв comes out as Khrushchyov.

Greek to Latin

A modern Greek scheme: θ = th, χ = ch, ψ = ps, η = i, υ = y, with the digraphs ου = ou, γγ = ng, αυ = av and ευ = ev. Accented vowels convert like their plain forms. ψυχή comes out as psychi.

Latin to Russian Cyrillic

For typing Russian on a Latin keyboard: write phonetically and the tool builds the Cyrillic. Combinations match longest first, which is why shchuka becomes щука rather than с+h+ч. An apostrophe gives the soft sign, a double apostrophe the hard sign, so zhizn' becomes жизнь.
